NEHEMIAH
City of Light Series

Jerusalem was more than a city; it was the city of God. Also known as Zion, Jerusalem is referred to around 1,000 times in the Scriptures. The most notable feature of the city was the temple constructed as the place God would dwell among His people. For this reason, Jerusalem was to be a city of light for the glory of God and what it meant for God to live among His people and for them to live in His presence. The Book of Nehemiah reveals the tragic state of ruin in the city and chronicles the effort of a people to see Jerusalem restored.

But the Book of Nehemiah serves Jesus’ disciples by reminding us that instead of living in a city of light, Jesus has called us to be a city set on a hill whose light is not withheld or hidden. Christians, wherever they dwell, should be a type of city within a city, demonstrating the kind of counter-cultural life of those in whom God lives and who live all aspects of their lives for the worship, obedience, and mission-advance of their King.
